[ Manga Discovery ] Kurogane

Kurogane
by Ikezawa Haruto

[ Demographic: SHOUNEN ]
A ghost of the last master of a certain kendo style searches for a disciple. After around a 150 years, a candidate to become the successor was finally found.... but the boy has ZERO capability in physical activities!
(6 chapters read as of the date this blog entry was posted)

POTENTIAL: B- (PRETTY GOOD!) FAVORITISM: 3.5 Hearts (LOVE) (but 4 Hearts to favorite characters xD)

Motivation: (What Made Me Check It Out)
Shounen Jump, Kendou, and Ghost? It was quite an attractive combination for me, hehe.
Curses: (What Seems to be Bad About It)
The heroine is really REALLY REALLY PATHETIC. Jeez, an enthusiastic kendo club member was so easy to raep. Not to mention that she's too stupid for her own good.
And oh... ECCHI THAT DON'T INVOLVE SAYURI SUCK =P
Praises: (What Seems to be Good About It)
It's nice that it shows a possibility that even those that are physically weak can become athletes. Our hero doesn't suddenly power-up either (him being possessed by Sayuri not counted). Most of his fights so far are on his own... a decent "loser-type-but-not-really" shounen hero ^^
Bias: (What's Keeping Me Hooked to It)
SHIDOU AND KUROGANE!!!!!!!! Rivals for now, but I know they're gonna be best friends xD Well, they're even pretty friendly right now compare to other shounen rivals, KYAAAAA xD
Fangirl: (What I Love in It)
SHIDOU AND KUROGANE ARE SO CUTE xD
My favorite for now would be Shidou, Kurogane (especially without glasses), and Sayuri xD She's HOTT~ (In spirit form, alright? I'm not fond of her doll form =_=)
Nostalgia: (What It Reminds Me of)
Hikaru no Go (spirit that is expert on a sport helping out a newbie in the present day)
Overall:
This is honestly like a lesser version of Hikaru no Go. HnG has the better plot, more complex battle strategies, and it didn't have the typical damsel-in-distress heroine. Kurogane, on the other hand, followed a lot of the shounen cliches and is really mediocre compare to Hikaru no Go.... BUT this one is more hilarious and action-packed. HnG may be more impressive than Kurogane, but Kurogane is more fun to read.
Thankfully, the biggest flaw of this series (the heroine) only had the most participation in the first chapter, but for the rest she's mostly just on the sideline. So it wasn't much of a headache. This series may be following the shounen formula, but its premise is too interesting and many of its characters too adorable to give up on. xD
Let's see how far a hero who only has good eyesight will be able to excel in a sport that is more well known for those with physical stamina and good speed ;D
