Durarara!! - Episode 5: Best Friends Centric (Kida and Mikado)

This episode made me SQUEE so much with all those best friend love fanservice and even made me teary-eyed because they're so sweet, touching, and DAAAAAWWWW . . . . Damnit you two, damnit.

Kida's the narrator for this episode and there's honestly a lot about him but for this entry . . . I'll just focus on his wonderful relationship with his best friend~ Ohohohoho~

[ BEST OF FRIENDS ]

Anri: Looks like you two are really close
Kida: Yeah, we are.
Mikado: Although it's more of a fatal tie

I really adore best friend duos that get along so well even if their personalities are almost complete opposites and they've been buddies for such a long time.
I find these two most adorable when they tease each other:

[ TEASES - THE MENTAL TORTURER ]

Mikado: You don't need to take him seriously, Sonohara-san. You'll just get worn out. And he talks like he's a playboy, but he's not even that impressive. He tried to pick up some girls the other day, but-"

This is Mikado's great ability: how he awesomely ridicules his best friend in what he does. His mocking tone was terrific. I love this evil!Mikado. I love it.

[ TEASES - THE PHYSICAL TORTURER ]

Kida: Nii . . .YAAAH!

Unfortunately for Mikado, Kida has his ways on fighting back. Being the physically weaker one is still at a disadvantage at that sense. Haha! Kida's favorite torture methods on him seem to be the armlock(?) thing and the tickling . . .haha!

[ HE WAS LONELY UNTIL HE CAME ]

Kida: Before Mikado came to Ikebukuro, I was seriously depressed.

Who would expect that this jolly idiot is capable of being depressed? Haha! So he's in such a cheerful mood right now because his best friend came for him~ (Well, Mikado did say that he came because of Kida, aside from living in a new place)
Yes, yes, there are other people that made Kida happy, but I still think it's safe to conclude that Mikado's the biggest reason why he's happy right now. How touching . . . it's the "cheerful" one who's being cheered up by the "gloomy" one.

[ PURE BOY ]

Kida: He's simple, honest, and naive, but he can also be pretty stubborn. You just can't leave him alone.

In other words, Mikado seems so fragile, innocent, and pure to Kida. He looks absolutely harmless that I'm not surprised that Kida had given himself a responsibility to watch over this guy. Much more now that Mikado's getting interest on something dangerous...

[ PROTECTOR ]

Kida: So I at least try to watch over him by always being by his side... if I could help it, I'd rather not have him go near the darkness of this city. There are times when I feel like the city is about to suck me in. But Mikado, I won't let you go over to that side.

This was so touching~ You think Kida's just hanging out with Mikado to have fun? No, he's standing guard as well. He wants to make sure that Mikado won't be in any harm. Daaaaaaawwww . . . I was so touched . . .so touched so touched so touched so touched so touched so touched~

[ BEST FRIEND IN DANGER ]

Kida: *sees Mikado running after someone even though he's supposed to be at home by that hour* Mikado?

Of course he runs after his best friend when that happened~ Unfortunately, he's the one who got into trouble. . .

[ BEST FRIEND TO THE RESCUE ]

Mikado: Kida-kun!
Kida: Come on, Mikado. Not you too?

Funny that it was the one who's about to "rescue" was the one who got rescued. Haha!
And of course I've noticed that back then when Anri was in trouble, Mikado was still thinking on how to handle the situation; but this time that Kida's obviously in trouble, he ran straight to them. WITHOUT THINKING Nah, he didn't think of his safety or whether he'll look heroic at all. Who cares if he "ditched" Kida in one of the previous episodes.

[ THEY NEED EACH OTHER ]

Kida: It may actually be me that's relying on him.

With their personalities and with Mikado not yet used to the city, it really seems more like it's Mikado who depends on Kida the most. But from this episode, it really shows that the dependence is mutual. I knew it~ Mikado seemed lame, but deep inside he's still awesome in his own way~

[ HE'S NOT TO BE UNDERESTIMATED ]

Kida: He's really quick on the uptake when it comes to certain things.

Seems to me that Mikado can be a great observant on certain things. He also makes the right conclusions but avoids being rude. He's an honest fellow . . . he'll tell you frankly if you did something stupid. But he doesn't seem to be the type who'll mock you. Hmmm . . . he's kinda like the angelic version of Izaya. Yeah . . .I can imagine him being able to match Izaya when it comes to cleverness. Oooo . . . no wonder Izaya seems fond of him. That shota stalker!

[ RIVAL IN LOVE ]

Kida: Some dork is getting in my way

Back to the two, even though Kida loves his best friend so much, unfortunately, he's also his rival in love (You stupid playboy, you already have a girlfriend!). It's funny when Kida becomes annoyed with Mikado on love-realted situations though. Haha!

[ CUPID CAN'T RUIN THE BEST FRIEND RELATIONSHIP ]

Kida: I only realized this just now but I seem to like our current relationship.

Yes, there's a love triangle. But it's no typical love triangle wherein there's intense jealousy and annoying angst, and best friends still remain as best friends. Kida still loves his best friend even though he wants to get the girl (and most likely it'll be the same case Mikado once he realizes that Kida is serious about Anri).

Oh I love these two. I love this series. Kyaaaaaaaaa~
